The National Guard is a part of the US military that is generally called up to respond to state-level emergencies, such as natural disasters. And, unlike most of the other military forces, it can also serve a domestic law enforcement role which is why it's been deployed outside the trial. Former police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial over the May 2020 killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man. Mr Chauvin, who is 44 years old, is accused of second-degree unintentional murder and manslaughter in the death of Mr Floyd on 25 May last year.
