Kris joined Alan R. Bunn of the National Marine Sanctuary Program down at the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Designated in 1990, it is the ninth national marine sanctuary to be established in a system that comprises 13 sanctuaries and two marine national monuments. That’s because this sanctuary protects 2,900 square nautical miles of waters surrounding the Florida Keys, from south of Miami westward to the Dry Tortugas, excluding Dry Tortugas National Park, starting at the mean high-water mark.
