Tetouan ( Arabic : تطوان , ( Tetwan ); Berber : ⵜⵉⵟⵟⴰⵡⵉⵏ , ( Tiṭṭawin )) is a city in Morocco , located in the north of the country, in the Western Rif , also called Jbala country . The city is located about 60 km southeast of the city of Tangier and near the Strait of Gibraltar , in a valley (the Cluse de Tétouan) dug by the Mhannech wadi in the mountains of the Rif limestone chain in the north and south. Tetouan is considered “the most Andalusian city in Morocco” 1 . Due to its history and its geographical location, it has always had a very strong link with Spain and Andalusia in particular. Its medina (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 2 ), in its architecture and art, bears witness to the strong Andalusian influences it has undergone, so much so that the city is still nicknamed today "the daughter of Granada" 3 , 4 , “The White Dove” 5 , 4 (in homage to its color) or even “little Jerusalem” 6 , 7 .
